Lobby your MP

One of the most effective actions you can take to highlight the importance of urgent action on climate change is to write to your MP.

Since the recent election we have several new MPs and, if you live one of these constituencies (Norwich North, North Norfolk, South West Norfolk, Great Yarmouth and South Norfolk), it's particularly worth your while introducing yourself. And for the other constituencies, there is no harm in giving them a nudge for the climate.

It is also particularly effective to visit your MP and talk to them directly. Details of MP's surgeries are available on their websites, but let us know if you have difficulty finding out this information.

If you're writing a letter, it's great to compose your own. Alternatively, if you're short of time we have put together a pre-written letter below for the period after the 2024 general election, which you can just cut and paste into your own email, or edit at your convenience. The letter includes an optional reference to climate income, a policy idea we are particularly keen to promote.

You can find contact details, and preferred mode of address, of your own MP by entering your postcode here or here. Please remember to include your name and address:

Dear [MP name]

Congratulations on your recent successful election to parliament.

I’m contacting you as a constituent who has deep concerns about climate change.

It’s quite clear that global heating is the biggest threat to our future wellbeing and security. As extreme weather around the world is pushing millions to the margins of existence, here in Norfolk we have seen both drought and excessive rainfall disrupt food production and threaten our unique biodiversity, while over the coming decades the health impacts of extreme heat will only increase and large swathes of our low-lying areas could be lost to the sea.

Despite a global commitment to make every effort to stay below an increase of 1.5C, global temperatures over the last 12 months were 1.64C hotter than pre-industrial times. In just a few years the rises in temperature have gained such momentum that the need for genuinely radical action to sharply cut emissions is beyond question. And of course, the longer we leave it before acting, the more radical we will need to be.

I’d like to hear about your views on climate change - what actions would you support to rapidly achieve Net Zero and how you would like to see us adapt to the inevitable changes we will live through? I would also like to have a commitment from you that you will put climate change at the front and centre of your work as an MP.

Finally, I am wondering if you are aware of the idea of climate income – you can see more details here. I would be very interested to know what you think.

Thank you in advance for your consideration of this important matter

Best regards
